One of my favorite movies when I was much younger was the original Willy Wonka movie starring Gene Wilder. As a kid, I was fascinated by its fantastical, subtly sinister story of hope, honor, greed and innocence. So when I found out early this year that they were doing a remake (starring no less than Johnny Depp), I just knew I had to watch it, and my anticipation for it was greater than even Star Wars Episode III, Batman Begins or War of the Worlds.
Even though I wanted to watch the movie I had slight reservations, because it truly looked like a kid's movie, so I was afraid I wouldn't enjoy it. I was also thinking that I already knew how things would turn out so there's even less excitement.
Then again minutes into the movie I was grinning like a child with a big chocolate bar, completely immersed in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I was pleasantly amused by how much I seemed to enjoy the movie -- it was as if I had stepped into my Grade 5 shoes again. Most of the original plot was still the same, although the ending changed considerably. I thought the new ending was a bit cheesy, but at that point I was willing to forgive anything, as it just felt like such a memorable and nostalgic ride.
